Construction begins on Australia’s first dementia village

The first sod was reversed this week on the Korongee dementia Greenwich Village in Glenorchy, Tasmania, scoring the first of an innovative new approach in Australia to caring for those who are living with dementedness.

Korongee village reflects the current global drive to improve the timber of biography of people living with dementia.

The village is designed so as to encourage residents to maintain a gumption of themselves, to have control over the decisions they stool, and to feel they have a place where they go and are part of a safe and secure home and community.

The village is the first of its benign in Australia, and is the product of a partnership between HESTA, the not-for-profit preserved care provider Glenview, the Land Political science and Social Ventures Australia.

Korongee design

The design of Korongee is supported on a typical Tasmanian cul-de-sac, and is intended to encourage people sustenance with dementia to continue to participate in normal, casual activities.

The Greenwich Village will comprise 12 Eight-bedchamber houses, and a moneymaking centre, where there is a café, supermarket, beauty parlor and gardens.

"Residents at Korongee will live in small houses with others whose values they share. All the homes are being built with dementia design principles throughout, so a sense of everyday normality is so much easier to maintain," Ms O'Flaherty said.
